she had sunflower petals for hair, ivory for skin, and whirlpools for eyes. her whole life, people wondered how something so miraculous could be so beautifully reckless; throwing her heart at boys who only wanted to bring it home to torture. sometimes she would scream at the ocean because it was the only thing that understood her, the only thing that resembled her. the ocean would crash on the shore in reply.
“it’s okay to cry. look at me, i’m all saltwater.”
and she would lie in the sand until everything felt okay again. one day she woke up on the shore and saw a boy lying next to her. it was the first time any man had enough courage to be next to someone so strong. she handed her heart to him and he put it back in her ribcage
